Presidents Report - Hannah Eisen

As we come to the conclusion of the final contest for the 22/23 season, we can take a moment to reflect on what has truly been an extraordinary year for our club.

We celebrated the clubs 60th anniversary at the Cut Back Festival. Our team ventured to Newcastle for the Australian Boardriders Battle, showcasing surfing skills and representing our club with pride. We experienced remarkable growth in membership, particularly among longboarders, supergroms, and social members. We even introduced yoga classes, providing a new dimension to our club's offerings and fostering a sense of holistic well-being. Throughout it all, we had an abundance of fun and laughter along the way!

For me, the most exciting achievement has been working with Bobby Matthews and an amazing crew of members and volunteers to renovate the clubrooms. This was all made possible through a $35,000 Bendigo Bank Grant which allowed us to replace the single glazed rotten windows and a further $10,000 Council Grant which assisted in upgrading the 30-year-old worn carpet tiles to timber spotted gum.

We had an army of people help paint the place, update the bathrooms, repair the roof, service the fire and put the club back together again. Special mention to Tim Anagnostou, Emily and Steve Scott, Jo Stubbs, Melina Van and Charlie Dennison, for their time and eye for detail during the renovations. As well as Dano Laing, who steam cleaned those carpet tiles for years!

The new solar system and battery is saving over $2200 in energy bills annually which is fantastic! Not to mention the environmental benefits of 3774 KG of Green House Gasses saved; the equivalent of planting 200 trees a year.

For the nerds out there, you can read about PIBC in the case study link: https://www.islandenergy.com.au/case-studies/boardriders-surf-club-solar-battery-system#savings-on-energy-bills

The 2 Grants received from Change our Game and Council helped PIBC launch a 12-week girls surf and yoga program that challenged the stereotype of surfing being a boys sport. This is now a pilot program for women and girls in surfing. We aimed at increasing the participation of girls who surf and, by doing so, increased participation in competitions and memberships while establishing friendships and essential community connections. PIBC partnered with local surf coaches to provide specialised coaching from talented locals (Thanks Glyndon and Jess Laing) and tailored the program to individual needs. PIBC also teamed up with local sports providers and governing bodies to show the Club’s female members, mothers, daughters, and sisters that surfing is for everyone, regardless of age and ability. A nice little write up has been posted here about it: https://gippsport.com.au/good-news-stories-phillip-island-boardriders-club

We have achieved so much as a club, and it is really humbling to reflect on the season and our success. We should be proud of the 60 years milestone that we just celebrated.

There are so many people in this community who contribute to our epic club, too many to list, but without everyone chipping in, these success stories wouldn’t happen.

Next year is going to be better than ever, so come along, get involved and most importantly, have fun!

Treasurers Report - Jo O’Reilly Stubbs

It was another very successful year for the club financially, and has put the club in a very secure position going forward.
Plus the clubroom renovations! And the 60th! Here are some stand outs for the financials -

Trading Income

● Membership is at its highest level in six years, bringing in $30,879.82 this 22/23 season
● Grants were secured at a huge $74,857.00 - a big thank you to Hannah and Geoff for doing most of the work behind these. Grant sources included Bass Coast Shire Council, Bendigo Bank San Remo branch, Phillip Island RSL, Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions and Sustainability Victoria
● Sponsorship and donations were a generous total of $10,976.00 from multiple members and local businesses
● Prize money our Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle (ABB) team brought in $2,050.00 - big congrats and thanks to Ash, Carl, riders and their support team ● Bar takings were a huge $35,961.82 thanks to Nat, Dani and other RSA holding bar helpers
● Raffle tickets on presentation nights and 60th brought in $11,676.60 profit - thanks to the hustling groms!
● Merchandise brought in $1,544.00 in sales
● Room hire brought in $5,450.00 profit with greatly increased financial potential post renovations
● Yoga as a new income stream has already brought in $425.00 clear profit, from the beginnings of a Bass Coast Shire Council grant for our Girls Yoga Surf program, and with increased potential with completed renovations

Gross Profit is more than double the amount from last financial year - at an impressive $179,360.64 total!

Operating Expenses

The biggest expense item was clubhouse equipment and fittings at $89,971.33 - a renovation estimated at worth $250,000 commercially! It was largely funded by grants by Bass Coast Shire Council and Bendigo Bank San Remo branch, as well as completed by many volunteers and their labour. Items in this category include replacing structural steel work, new glass doors and windows, floors, paint, toilets, mirrors, door locks, blinds and furniture. All of these aimed at improving the experience for the members and social connection - as well as generating ongoing income streams through venue hire and yoga.

The next biggest expense was surfing event costs at $21,469.26, which included food and drinks as well as some prizes, surfing equipment, rash vests, sound equipment, ipads and judging software subscription (LiveHeats). Some of these costs this financial year were also covered by grants by Phillip Island RSL and Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions.

The third largest expense was presentation nights at $20,374.20, which included everything involved with hosting our post surf event presentations such as prizes, food and drinks and entertainment. This included the costs for our once in 60 years party such as event management and related advertising. The 60th also generated $12,320.00 in ticket sales and was also supported by grants from Bass Coast Shire Council.

Financial Position

The club has continued to maintain strong financial security. This has been through a number of controls including: two person approvals on any payments, electronic POS systems, not leaving any cash undeposited and the use of accounting software Xero. Overall, the club is in a strong and secure financial position which has been a result of hard work from all committee members over a number of years, with currently over $40K in our accounts. This will allow the club to prioritise key areas and fund the repairs and maintenance to restore the exterior of the clubrooms.

Big thanks to Marcus for teaching the Treasurer role to me.
